absolutely agree but it's also worth noting that there is still a LOT of stigma around divorce in japan (not that it isn't rough in the us but i think everyone grew up knowing at least a few kids whose parents weren't together so it's not that unusual) so in addition to the difficulties of being a single parent he's probably also worried that if they get divorced the kid will be gossiped about by neighbors and bullied or ostracized by classmates. also hoping that's what he chooses by the end though ofc q__q
