Yes in this particular scene it is the miscalculation of the teacher. But others (including me) don't like Tess is because she is a damsel in distress. After this scene she will be endangered again and Arthur needs to save her again. It's getting annoying. I'm not yet done reading the novel but so far there's no scene that will make me like Thess.
