How he became the emperor is because his dad the previous emperor plus others retainers support him to be the next in line instead of his two older brother.
First brother is too spoiled, arrogant and stupid. Second one is too weak and no ambition.
His dad was also not really that strong and slightly weak hearted, keep losing war and the only income of his country/kingdom, is agricultural, and many other government management problems.
As for how he got that spirit, it will be explain in much further chapters.
