I was thinking something similar. She distanced herself from her family because she's not allowed to have anything precious of her own and we he used his power to save her she screamed in terror. Seems to me like she's trying to protect him from whatever she thought she brought upon him and that's why he's not allowed to use the name she gave him. Maybe she thinks that as long as there is some kind of connection between them, he will suffer and that's why she cut all ties with him.
