It's kinda easy to get it. She can't say or do anything to her cousin because she lives at the 'mercy' of her parents. If she were to do anything they might take it out on her younger siblings instead and she has no back up plan because all the money she has is used on her school, her siblings school and she probably have to pay for her and her siblings stuff in the house while still doing chores.
