Well, he still hasn't reached the top. He probably didn't think that another guy would come and "snatch his girl away". The whole time she was the only one he had romantic interest and he thought it would be the same with her since she also loved him a lot. He kind of took the relationship for granted, like they were meant for each other, and that this break wouldn't harm the relationship, but rather it would beneficial to their relationship, since he finally would able to make her happy like she made him happy.
He isn't a bad guy, his way of thinking is just fucked up and ended up hurting people including him.
I do think he deserves a second chance, but not with her. Even if it weren't his intentions, he ended up hurting her a lot, too much to end up in a relationship again. I just hope he has learned his lessons and won't hurt the woman he loves again...
