Somewhere in the beginning of the story he mentioned that when he was younger he tried to run away, and tried to save his mom as well, but the family punished him or something like that. So he probably saw Miuem with his mother. That or Hajoon told him that his mom is always with a kid.
If you are referring to the current time, he knew who Miuem was as soon as they met in like chapter one. You can see him staring at Mieum's scar on his neck because he knew where it was from.
