It’s not uncommon for illegitimate children to be brought up under the family since you never know when your legitimate heirs might die from the plague or wars, etc… Depending on the situation, they can also be used as political bargaining chips or shields for the burdens of your legitimate children.

For daughters they can be given to useful but unpleasant matches so the legitimate daughter doesn’t have to, while the family still reaps the benefits. In this case, the royal palace is a shitshow of malice, machinations, and manipulations which the Duke sis not want his “real” daughter to endure. By using Olivia, he can spare the daughter he actually cares about while maintaining the benefits of a royal connection. He may have been aware of the prince’s blatant infatuation with another woman even before the wedding (though it’s not uncommon for royalty, or any nobleman to cheat). Another issue is that any woman marrying into the royal family would have almost no power to divorce, separate, or leave no matter what mistreatment they have to endure unless their spouse allowed it. At least with another noble, his real daughter would be able to protest and/or leave if things got rough.

It was common for kings to draft soldiers by asking for a son from each noble family, so in this case, you can send your bastard son to war, to keep your legitimate child safe at home. On the flip side, if your legitimate heir dies at war, your bastard can be used as a secondary heir so that your distant family can’t take over your title when you die.

Just because she hasn’t learned magic or swordsmanship, developed special powers, fought in a war, or seized political power through social warfare doesn’t mean she’s weak. Compared to most FLs, she has very little to work with.

No special powers/skills, no allies, no friends, no supportive family, ostracized by everyone in the social sphere, no access to her own money (to escape or live on her own), and no comprehension or experience in what it means to be treated well. She’s also been gaslit so hard that the duchess’s death was her fault, so she carries that unnecessary guilt around with her. She could scream her head off and fight tooth and nail, but it would change a thing. Even if she succeeded in getting rid of her engagement with the prince, she would pro promptly get reengaged to someone else who would likely treat her the same or worse.

Even if she tried to run away, her family would just hunt her down and drag her back, but she knows all too well how difficult it is to survive as a commoner. The pain of constant rejection may hurt, but not like the pain of starvation. More importantly it never occurred to her to resist at all until someone showed her that she could have a better life. She’s taking extremely difficult steps to recognize and validate both her trauma and inherent self worth.

That path is not laid out for her in some prophetic dream, time reversal, or novel plotline. The universe, plotline, and other characters are not forcing her to grow, she’s doing it all on her own and I think that makes her a lot stronger than a lot of other FLs who only reach that state after being forced to.

The mom died because she was leaving to go somewhere since she was pissed that her husband turned out to be a cheater with an illegitimate child. No cheating = no bastard child = no angry/betrayed wife = no sudden trip to blow off steam that ends in a tragic accident. Even if he felt responsible or whatever he could have put her in an orphanage and sponsored her, gotten her adopted by a lower noble, or raised her in a different estate without his family finding out. That shit only went down because he decided to use her as his legitimate daughter’s replacement without informing or consulting his wife. That woman knew exactly what was going to happen to Olivia and how much she was going to suffer for the sake of her father’s “real” family
