I agree, I also thought that when they showed the mc's mom was the only one who ever managed to get Maria to spare somebody that Maria wanted to kill, and from the moment Maria said the only time she had ever liked her own son was when he seemed to have been the one to save Sierra (the mc's mom), and even more when she reproached her son for killing Sierra's son, which is unexpected given how she's just as psycho as her son and how her son doing that helped him the father's chosen heir and favorite, which in turn let herself get to have the most power out of all the man's wives... Even the mc trusts *Maria* with watching over her mom in her absence... so I really think Maria definitely "loves" Sierra, in her own twisted way.
