I have to say I was thinking of doing the same thing but I read the novel and the ML isn't actually hopeless. He's not a heartless person and you see him question himself more and more because of events that happened between Rosemond and the Queen.
Trust me most ppl reading the novel didn't want the Emperor to be the ML then we learnt of his past and.... damn man you can't help but feel sorry for this guy. What he went through was really fucked up. Like FL CRIED on the SPOT FUCKED UP. And then he ends up with a manipulative bitch like Rosemond. OMG!
We all don't love him yet but he's not a typical ML and we see a we see a lot of potential character development in the future.

Plus, it's not about their sad back story because Rosemond has a tragic backstory but that doesn't make her a good person, it doesn't make her right for abusing her maid or any of the things she has done or will do. The FL even eventually comes to the realization that all three of them, her, Rosemond and the Emperor have their own tragic story but it's their actions after that truly differentiates them.
Does he get better as a person or remain a dick and chooses to stay with Rosemond
As the things that Rosemond do come to light, he begins to questions his feelings of love for her and see her true self. With the Queen I think will be able to make a lot of mental and emotional progress which leads to good character development.
