That how it happens in novels. So him suddenly hating his lover and killing her doesn't seem to be a possibilty here so it doesn't look like she did something so wrong and unnacceptable i think

Tbh I think it depends. Some people want to be loved until their last moment. Some people dont want to burden their loved ones by their death.
I think what he did was brave. If he understood the reason why she refused him, surely he knew the consequences of his question. But to him, it is worth asking her than regret not asking.
