What's wrong with arranged marriages? It's not like marrying based on love always works and overcoming the differences between families and traditions create true love IMHO
Arranged marriages aren't neither inherently evil and problematic. As for the story, I think the story doesn't romanticize arranged marriages and if anything, it portraits them somewhat (if we take into account the setting of the story) . They clearly don't communicate enough, and let the opinions they have for each other's characters dictate their decisions, rather speak about their problems and try to solve them. Riftan is focused on Max's outer appearance and acts either as a horn dog or as an overprotective dad with anger issues and Max does the same to Riftan and either acts like she's about to get beaten up and go meet her creator or as robot with no will of her own. In the novel it's not up until the latest chapters that they actually try to use their brains collectively and try to make their relationship actually work. The only aspect of their relationship that is portrayed in a positive light is the sex. And really, you don't need a deep understanding of the other person's internal world for a happy hump session.

my problem with these two specifically is that tess is like twelve whereas art’s mind is middle aged. its kind of pedophilic if you think about it Hailey
Oh yeah that’s weird but i was mostly saying that because people really hate tess
