It makes sense. I think this arc was more about Huan Wen coming to terms with his sexuality. Their friendship was very sweet but any romantic feelings seemed to be only from Huan Wen's side. While an unrequited love may be sad for Huan Wen, the fact that this friendship allowed him to stop being in the closet still makes it very beautiful. His new life will begin now.
