In the first life Cesare was driven by envy. He was only interested in obtaining what Alfonso possesed. His status, influence, wife, etc. Ariadne wasn't a possession of Alfonso, that's why she was meaningless to him and he failed to see how much better of a partner she was compared to her sister. In this lifetime Alfonso lost virtually everything that Cesare had his eyes on. And the title of future heir to the throne fell on him. As a consequence he's struggling to navigate being a prince/ commander and noone he's relied on so far has helped as much as Ariadne did. Hence, his new found fondness of her. Where he no longer views her as a piece to conquer over Alfonso. But rather as an asset for his future as king.
