It feels sad when Claude rejected and returned to the cold figure towards Athy. Personally I dont think any child deserve to feel that.

I once started my life again at a far place after a dramatic change and gain peacefulness all alone so I can resonate with her fresh feeling. ^^
I can understand that and I like it even though I've never experienced it myself but my problem with this story is that everything is going to waste once the "romance" starts. Her peaceful life is going to take a turn for the worst being the romantic interest of such a man. Even if the man himself becomes a doting loving person (I highly doubt that) the public is never going to accept a duke (or prince or whatever) being with a slave let alone a dethroned princess then there'll be women jealous of her and his fiancée....
basically, everything likeable about this story is going to be reversed once the romance starts
