It's not that he did anything, its what her current husband did in all her past lives, I'm not sure if you're caught up so I won't say. This is my opinion, but i don't think her and Emiliano were meant to last, it says they were blinded by love which would imply they were happy with what they have but it's more like they didn't realize they were bad for eachother, it was a relationship built on poverty, guilt, and her last ditch effort to get away from the crown prince
