The parents died when he was so young. I can only assume the political environment and being a child emperor surrounded by figurative sharks around him muted his previous open nature under his parents's guidance. Plus, he was under the impression that Lizzie is in cahoots with the dukes for his power since she hid her suffering and act perfectly like a doll that it freaked him out to the point he didn't bother to look at her and notice that she's the real victim. If there are anyone to blame, I blame all the adults around him as he grew up after his parents' death.
