It’s upsetting to see so many people disappointed that it’s not yaoi or that there is romance involved in this story.
Some form of romance adds plenty to the story. Ofc it gets tossed around a bit but romance isn’t the sole focus of the story.
Plus if this was a yaoi, Vanitas and Noe (whatever their ship name is) would be a nightmarishly toxic relationship dynamic, just based off of how they react off one another in almost every interaction this far. They can never agree on things and have very contrasting and conflicting personalities (for plot reasons though)
Vanitas has horrible commitment issues from trauma, so much so that he refuses share an ounce of himself or his knowledge to anyone and he is always ready and prepared to just up and leave.
Noe also has his own issues with commitment too, he trusts too many people and (realistically) the outcomes rarely are successful unless you are the protagonist of an anime.
Nonetheless, romance was never the first focus to the story, it adds good relief between story arcs though.
Simply read to enjoy the story as the author writes it and if you don’t like it, don’t feel obligated to stay around.
