I wonder what’s up with Japanese logic when it comes to foreign names. One of my favorite mangas has a female MC named Gabriel.... although I love her it’s difficult to take her seriously with that name

Yeah, you're right "Annaka" is a Japanese surname. Made up of the kanji An=Peace and Naka=Middle/Center/Inside. So it literally translates to Peaceful Center. I think the MC just shortened it cause they are close friends? Although I don't know why he just doesn't call him by his first name? I think it's cute tho.
