If i remember correctly, it's pure jealousy. They were jealous how ophelia showed (platonic) love to one single person (our mc) while obviously hating everyone else. Ophelia was "kind" and " docile" whenever she interacted w the mc. Whereas with them and everyoneelse who only showed pity towards her health situation , she would treat them with anger and hatred.
