It was already confirmed that magical items can’t have mind of their own and stuff, and the fact that he actually can’t recall memories about himself and about what he is and why he in the mirror, make me think that the mirror is actually a cursed object and he is stuck there because of some magic. The mirror ended up all the way in the palace, and that’s how he went missing.
The only question is if someone did it on purpose to get rid of him or if as part of meddling with the mirror he got stuck there.
