I don’t like what Jan did but I think it was majorly the pheromones fault. If you notice when he’s with the lion guy (can’t remember his name) he notices he’s feeling the pheromones a lot more. Which leads you to believe Jamil was holding them back, hence why Jan had more control of himself when with Jamil.
