I’ll start off with: I’ve never liked the main characters. I found the bottom endearingly but annoyingly clingy and it made me uncomfortable how he idolized the top to a point it wasn’t healthy. The top was an asshole—period. He was god awful to the bottom, mistreated him all the time and never really learned how to fix his abusive tendencies. That scene where he physically hurt the bottom bc he was jealous and wasn’t mature enough to simply talk to the bottom about it? It was gross. And to see the bottom forgive him immediately? Also very gross.
But ofc, the top went through the redemption arc, the bottom distanced himself and both realized they couldn’t live w/o each other, whatever. Happily ever after, with no real changes to fix the problems that occurred during the relationship. Cliche, overused trope, I’m over it.
Then, the author decided resurrect this webtoon for a pt 2, featuring the side characters in a—guess what?—same redemption arc pattern. The bottom/sub is abused (this time both physically and emotionally), and conforms to abusive relationships as a result. The dom, as we come to discover, is incredibly emotionally manipulative and is also an abusive piece of shìt. Sound familiar? Ofc the end is one of two things, they get together despite the glaring emotional manipulation and abuse (very probable), or the sub realizes how toxic their relationship was and how the boundaries he set and made clear before (i.e. no romantic ties) were being violated, and that was not ok so he leaves (very improbable).
I don’t know why I waste my time praying for a fitting redemption when the characters that are getting them never really deserve them? It sucks that such pretty art and hard work on the creator’s behalf are being brought down by shitty character design...
I understand what you’re saying from the beginning with dong-gyun and alex but MD was actually very nice to Chanwoo they both had the bdsm kink but this time it was chanwoo who was being manipulative towards MD..now MD is being a little bit to much right now I agree there but He is mad that chanwoo rejected him then chanwoo decided to rub in MD’s face that he(chanwoo) got a boyfriend that wasn’t MD.. I liked chanwoo in the beginning but now I’m not really sure. And I know he was abused but MD was in all actuality he was a good person after they practiced their kinks he made sure he was ok and even tended to his wounds.. MD was sincerely worried about chanwoo but MD got thrown away..
MD had always been so so so nice and respectful to Chanwoo tho, until this happened. He made a mistake. A really BIG mistake... and he suddenly doesn't deserve a redemption arc? I mean- redemption arcs are basically for characters that have done a lot of wrongdoings. You don't give a full redemption arc to an irrelevant character that did some little mistakes that no one cares about. A redemption arc is not about forgetting the sins that the person committed after all. It's about giving them another chance to change for the better (ofc it still should be fitting to the plot and the personality that they portrayed).
I'm honestly not rooting for this couple anymore. But I can't agree that MD doesn't deserve a redemption arc.
It’s true the sub was thoughtless towards the dom, and did a lot of things that probably purposefully hurt him. However, does that really excuse the manipulation towards the sub or how the dom’s treating him?
I actually don’t know where the manipulation is can you tell me I’m not being sarcastic I actually mean it I don’t know if I read it right but I would like to see your part.
You raise a good point, some characters are worth redemption, but I’m worried that this behavior won’t stop here. The pattern I mentioned is the repetition of same abusive tendencies over and over again. I’m under the assumption that the shitty treatment and abuse will escalate (for shock value and plot purposes to keep readers intrigued) until there isn’t anything to redeem anymore.
Also, is the dom even a good person if THIS is the shit he pulls when he’s hurt? To hurt the other back worse? By manipulating and hurting another guy (the stalker ex) to hurt both him and the sub? It doesn’t seem to me that he was a good person to begin with... but ofc, we’ll see. I appreciate your comment, it brought up interesting points!
Well, this is speculation on my part but do you think the dom intends to get back with his ex? The one that he blocked and clearly didn’t want to see, to the point the ex had to find the current sub just to get back in touch w the dom?
I don’t think so, so why would the dom offer that they go through some perverse trial just to see who will be his sub, when he doesn’t seem likely to go back to his ex? I think he wants to hurt the sub, because his feelings weren’t returned. He’s manipulating both of the subs by dangling the position of being his lover. He’s holding something they both want and forcing the current sub to do things he clearly doesn’t want to do. It’s manipulation, from someone with power over the two of them.
There certainly isn’t a lack of horrible tropes in BL, that’s for sure
These two are so equally dumb for equally different reasons and I LOVE BOTH OF THEM. NOTHING COULD EVER CHANGE MY LOVE FOR PAULINA. I ADORE
