Or does this seem a bit Chiharu-centric? I like her, don't get me wrong, I just feel like Maki doesn't have the spotlight at all.
Hmmm... I see what you mean. I agree but I think it might be less that Chiharu is getting the spotlight but more that she is the "damsel in distress" prototype character. (Personally, I find this plot device to be overdone and overbearing but a story's got to "story") Maki seems to be a bit more outspoken and forward. Not that I am stereotyping or overgeneralizing, but I think their characters are meant to be contrasting... how Maki can be more powerful and passionate while Chiharu is a bit more gentle and passive (almost weak) . However, I also want to see Maki, a stronger female character, get to be protected for once. It's often difficult to see strong and independent women get help because they are deemed unworthy of saving (since they could or should save themselves).
Yes, that! But also on the first few chapters, Maki was the first one who cried and Chiharu was the one who consoled her after and for me it felt like Chiharu being the heroine consoling a best friend trope. Also, the time when Chiharu was taken by both Avians and Merfolk, it felt as if Maki isn't even that relevant. Like she's supposed to be second fiddle. If the damsel-in-distress aura factors in that, I don't know, but it kinda irks me. But hey, altogether the concept is good. I just hope both supposed main characters are given the same amount of limelight.
Yes yes yes! I know exactly what you mean! It really has that dynamic of Chiharu=princess/priestess while Maki=hero. Just look at their disguises! Chiharu is the younger sister while Maki is the older brother. Maki is more "masculine" thus stronger, while Chiharu is the younger sister thus "feminine" and "weaker" and must be protected. It's a bit frustrating because I want Maki to be able to feel weak too! I want Maki to feel like she can be viewed, not as a fragile woman, but as one who is as vulnerable as Chiharu. Also, I know it isn't fair for me to be frustrated at Chiharu for getting kidnapped all the time but... CAN YOU STOP GETTING KIDNAPPED?! LOL Chiharu, can you please be the big girl that you are and take charge?! Maki is getting a lot of screening this time around but that's because she now has to go save Chiharu. This event is about Chiharu. Ugh. I love them both but I hope they don't keep this dynamic. A strong woman is not necessarily masculine and nonvulnerable, while a passive or "cuter" woman is not necessarily a damsel in distress who can't do squat to protect herself. Lol my tedtalk is finished.
I knoooow. Maki's screentime is almost always only dependent on Chiharu and even on the covers, both covers so far feature Chiharu. Like if you're going to make it like this just change the title to Me and My bestfriend and not Two Saints as if they're being treated equally when it's painfully obvious that Chiharu is going to be pushed in a limelight. This is Omoi, Omoware all over again at this point

The emperor doesn't have feelings for our queen?
of course not. He is like a father, maybe?
