And I’m sure somewhere Kan knew that Yumi has been in love with someone else. Especially when he is holding onto that phone all the time. Kan knew yumi was running away from his feelings. And I think Kan deserves the chance to be forgiven he knew what he was doing was had regretted it and hated his actions and himself. He was mentally, physically, and sexually abused at work. Stress from family and money problems. Being look down upon. And knowing himself he can never be his happy self again. Yumi didn’t talk about his problems because he wants to be a strong person and didn’t try to talk to Kan about his problems but just accept it and ignored it while waiting for the old Kan to smile and come back. Which hurts Kan more because he know he can’t go back to how he was. I’m not saying Kan didn’t do anything wrong domestic abuse is bad no matter how you put it but Kan should be given a second chance. He always regretted every time he hit Yumi but couldn’t stop, he even tried to leave once, he also knew the change in yumi and broke it off in order to let yumi go at the same time giving yumi a push to his happiness. If he was a mean and abusive person by nature then he wouldn’t let yumi go he would have beaten and threaten him. But he didn’t he told yumi to go so he wouldn’t hurt yumi any more. His circumstances led to his actions his bosses are jerks! If you read the prequel or all of the sequels( think there was 3) you see that he was not only physically and mentally abuse but also sexually. His boss made him strip and was about to rape him but I think he puked. In Azami you could see him calling out to his mom and yumi for help. Kan had a hard time too.

I guess to me the biggest issue with Jeanette's character is her inability to figure out what is happening around her and that she is being used. Where are the stakes? To her it's literally just a "I want daddy to love me like he loves Athy".

Yet we all know what will happen if Jeanette succeeded. It's not just that Athy's heart will break. Jeanette is literally being used the bad guys to take the throne from Claude. She'll be used to weaken and ultimately overthrow Claude. She won't get her daddy or the family she wanted. She'll be the instrument of Athy and Claude's destruction.

Even sadder Jeanette has no idea. It hasn't even crossed her mind in the story that she's being used. She doesn't question why Mr. White wants her so badly to be chummy with Claude. Hm... why do you think he wants you to make friends with the Emperor? Do you think he has an agenda?

For Jeanette to stay sweet she literally can't let herself suspect things. I think she actually doesn't let her see the bad stuff.

This means as a reader I am stuck saying, "I hope you fail" because I know what happens if she succeeds. She won't get her daddy, sister, and she'll let back in a monster.

So how can I be happy if Claude shows her any affection? The stakes are high IF she succeeds. So it sucks as a reader to see her character.

I wish Jeanette would at least start to show a hint of awareness of what's going on. I haven't seen any growth in her in 10 chapters. She's the same as she was at the start.

Athy grew a lot and came to love Claude. Jeanette isn't growing. Maybe in the future something will wake her up, but right now I'm seeing zero character growth and I can't root for her to win Claude's affection. He'll eventually be killed by the people using her if that happens.
