Does anyone actually remember the beard dude's name or did we just all forget about him
You are 3000 year too early for that. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
This story is set before the pharaoh dynasties. So during the late Bronze Age, edging Iron Age when the Ancient Egypt empire was preparing its entry in its golden age. Way before Greece political power was even a thing (set at 800 BC) or Italy settlement even started (750 BC)
If anything the bearded god is presented as a foreign uprising god, that is not yet well known outside of his land.
My early thoughts were that he could either a proto Greek god in its burgeoning form (like a young Zeus) or a proto Celtic god such as Olo or Taranos (respectively Odin/Daiga and Thor in their modern form) due to his appearance. But we still are too early as they only start appearing around 1500 BC.
I am more inclined to believe he is either the Canaan god Ba’al which started to grow power around that time, as the Canaan and Phoenician empire cemented in 3000BC.
Ba’al was the god of rain, wind, weather, saison, fertility and war. He was pretty dope and powerful (before monotheism came to be and turned him into Belzebud). At one point, not long after our story, Baal was worshipped as Baal Hammon, an Egyptian god of fertility, set in Carthage. And we all know the relationship between Hammon and Ra.
Or he could be Yahweh. The Israelite god. Which would be on point with the gag of never knowing his real name.
In the Jewish culture, god’s full name was a secret, but was known publicly through the letter YHWH. Only high priests could pronounce and read it. Once a year during a specific ritual. But the temple containing the sacred scroll with his full written name was burned and the priests with the knowledge killed. So they lost it forever.
Aparté: the reason you don’t call God’s name when you curse ( the « in god’s name » or « god dam it ») is because you can’t technically called him since his name is unknown. It had been transmitted orally that Yahweh is supposedly how you said it. But no one is certain.
In his prehistoric form, Yahweh was a warrior deity, master of weather and war, leader of the great army against the Israeli’s ennemis. He was Baal and Ishtar’s brother and existed within the pantheon of the Canaanite gods (and various other civilisation of Middle East and North African culture), which the Israelites at that time followed since they were still polytheists.
Then Yahweh absorbed many deity in his cultural evolution to become the Israeli « unique god », in the early Iron Age. So in term of timeline it fits. In term of personality it does too. Since we are now witnessing a god that is living in a side region (which Canaan or Phoenicia empire is), still behave like a warrior, and seek to invade Egypt which the Canaanite or Phoenician have attempted to do a few times.
So Ba’al or Yahweh, maybe.
But Jesus, definitely no.
