I actually don’t think he was intentionally manipulative in the head banging scene specifically. It honestly looked like he had a mental break after not getting the answer he wanted and then he regathered himself when they were interrupted and he smiled. Because right after that mood shift is when he threatened the mc with what would happen if he ever left. It’s not giving a rapist empathy, it’s just seeing how truly mad the king is and how it’s kind of sad to see how insane he actually is. But maybe that’s just how I interpret it

Yeah, exactly. Like he had no choiche but to do his duties(marry) while he was frustrated with his one sided love, wich was fueling his tramua and his bad behaviour even more. That roleplay while he tried to cope with his feelings, frustration was like a cry for help. It's just sad to see someone break.
