What you are thinking of is direct decendents, specifically where ancestry is traced directly from the maternal (mothers) or paternal (fathers) lineage.
The story still follows direct decendents but not from the main line (ie not from the first born) but they are decendents from close blood relitives.
Where there is a break in the lineage the next closest relitive is taken as the next in line or decendent. These are indirect decendents usally distant cousins.
Where there is a complete break in a royal line, there is usually a struggle for power.
If you want to understand more I suggest you look up the history of a country that have royalty and about rights of sucession.
