It’s obvious, from the beginning the uke had feelings for seme, even confessed but seme didn’t return those feelings- so in his mind, the seme doesn’t like him liek that
And since the uke is not a mind reader, he doesn’t fucking know when seme started developing feelings for him, because from uke POV, seme doesn’t see him as a romantic interest. And the seme NEVER tells him his feelings, thinking like it’s suppose to be obvious??
Like for us readers it’s obvious, but in some panels, you see seme from an outsider pov, and he’s depicted as this cool, reserve, handsome, mysterious, guy with minimal emotional facial expression, of course you’re not gonna know what he’s thinking?!?! Like when the girl came up to seme, seme was thinking about the uke and getting emotional, but what the girl and his guy friend sees, is just him, handsomely, lost in thought— like who tf would think he’s a puppy in love?
So when uke said the whole girlfriend thing in middle school, it was shown as a way to see if seme has someone he likes, I don’t think uke had a girlfriend at that time or really wanted one, because he liked seme. Even seme knew that uke was lying (which.. if you knew, why would you not just confess?!)
And just now, when uke saw seme together with the girl, he probably thought that seme didn’t like him like that, even tho uke still likes him (and I think his feelings rekindled when they met up again in college)—
And I want to reiterate again, seme NEVER confessed his feelings or anything, and it pisses me off how he expected uke to know his feelings, no matter obvious it is- communication is key.
