He cared for Geum but he just got too possessive it made him crazy. I think it stems also from how Geum lived his life before. But it doesn't excuse his abuse towards Geum. I think the part where the tattoo got messed up was his wake up call. He should be punished but i think Geum is happy enough to forgive him in exchange for freedom with Seungjae.
