We all tend to use other people for our own benefit, just the fact that some of the characters here are over the top manipulative and just plain trash, doesn't mean that their sexual orientation define the general perspective of those that shares the same sexual interest.
The author may not imply such hasty generalization, just that they wanted to make a twist to their character choices.
