I think he probably disappeared for a year or half a year and then came back to school and this is the story after he came back, because, later in the story he's trying to catch up on work so he can go to the same college a Zheng. And then Zheng says he was his best friend before he disappeared but when he came back he was different, I'm not 100% sure of what he meant as different, but I think he meant gay towards him.
