And I'm going to write another essay about Maxi because I really like her.
Granted I haven't read shoujo in a long time, but the weak female lead cliches have always been there and haven't changed much. But I think that Maxi is refreshingly different from the typical weak female lead that I usually hate. And it's not just about her trauma or stutter, but the way she's been written. She's introduced as “weak”, she knows she's weak and hates it, we all know from the start that she's weak. But the important thing is that she WANTS to change, and she's making efforts to change and showing visible improvement. And she IS improving, despite what people might think. The old Maxi would have never even made it down to the castle walls. The pace of her change is realistic, a few months in a new environment is not enough to overcome the lifelong mental and physical abuse she's faced. And her background of trauma isn't just there for decoration, it's integral to her character and the basis for her way of thinking and the choices she makes. Her lack of self confidence and self hate is rooted deeply in her and makes sense given her background. I think the fact that she acknowledges she's weak and insecure, while hating being like that at the same time and wanting to change, is something that makes me really empathize with her and want to root for her. She's helpless but she doesn't want to stay helpless. She's trying her best, but the road to improvement and recovery is a long and hard one when you have such trauma and self hate as deeply ingrained as Maxi does. But she's making an effort, and I want to see her efforts pay off.
This story isn't just about romance, I think at the core this story is about Maxi and her growth. This is just her starting point, so it'll be frustrating because we want better for her. It's frustrating to see her fail, to see her take two steps forward just to take a step back, to see her fall back into helplessness when she was doing so well for herself. But the important thing is that she gets back up when she falls, that she keeps trying even after she fails. And that's why I love her and how she's written. Not only is the pace of her growth realistic, but the journey too. She's not magically good at everything or strong and confident out of nowhere. Sometimes even with years of recovery, it can take just a moment to relapse. It's scary, and hard as hell, but we have to keep trying. So it's important that Maxi keeps trying, keeps changing even little by little. And I'll be here to read about her journey and cheer her on.

the mom.... i hate people like that so much fck you mean "stay strong" if you're not going to do anything to help him?!!! How is he supposed to just magically recover from his trauma??? also that hyung needs to get shanked and this girl needs to leave him tf aloooone.
This story went in a totally different direction than what I was expecting in the beginning...
