what does he mean he's being 'potrayed as a poor kid who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time'? that is EXACTLY what happened. why is he trying to look more self aware than he actually was at that moment?
Because he's ashamed of even getting to that place in the first place. He knew it would be shady, he suspected there would be drugs and was warned about the kind of people that would attend. He took the risk and got unlucky, but he is clinging to his ego or else he would have his self perception shattered. He went there to escape a past he finds shamefull, and now he's being told that this shame and his ignorance are the only things that can save his ass, and all in front of the person he wanted to look his best for.
