Idk about ayden being straight. If you re-read his part in chp.10 from the original story, it can be argued that he had romantic interest for shima, ”I couldn’t accept that yamashita was always the only one you were close to, even back in university.”

In the novel, it happened in the first flashack BEFORE Wei Wuxian in the present time is being shown to us. We saw that flashback before they even went to Yi City. It was also talked about before he died in the story.

That is the chapter, but in that chapter, he never learned what the headband means because Lan Zhan didn't let Lan Zichen explain the meaning to Wei Wuxian. It was in chapter 69 of the novel. Before they even talked about Wei Ying's death. That is why Wei Ying said he still didn't get why Lan Zhan fiercely protected the head ribbon after closely examining it when he asked drunk Lan Zhan to hand it over and he did without hesitation.
I still have the chapter where they had their first kiss and where they had sex for the first time in my head cos I go back to read them from time to time. LOL!
