they´re a metaphor. it´s like sensei is trying to explain a really complicated psyche of a broken child through cute characters. one represents his empty automatic behavior and the other all his suppressed feelings and new feelings, new impulses he´s learning. they´re not really separated, the aspects are mingling and stirring - or something like that would be my understanding of it (⌒▽⌒)
