I feel like the MC is NOT the victim, as it was very clear that magic was dangerous. I sympathize about her mother, but not about her desperation for magic. Kids always make mistakes that the parents pay for, but honestly the MC barely felt anything about her mother other than very few panels.

Yeong isn't as dumb as people call him. Remember, from his perspective, he has the right for those assumptions. We, as the reader, see everything in the correct context, but the characters don't.
