Although the male leads in this were sort of sappy and loving-types, I found it strangely refreshing that they gave their undivided love at every moment. It’s nice not to have to go through the shitty male lead syndrome or slow burn angst. The whole gender disparity blindness is also quite nice because though there is chauvinism and sexism written slightly into supporting cast or insignificant mob characters, the main ml (nine) and for example robbie, demonstrate a flip on the whole gendered convention behind these stories that are centered around aristocratic landed gentryish periods. I think that for the sake of a wholesome upbeat and optimistic narrative, its just nice to read. Another thing I liked is that finally finally a story with a “Female lead” who isn’t a twist villain (i mean, most of them are sooo obvious too, like…) or plot device controlled by a greater power. We just have a genuine, down-to-earth but not too jaded and loving “Female lead” in Yuri and I love that. Because girls should be girls and be besties bc i love women supporting women (its just how its meant to be, duh). More than anything, wow! It’s actually complete!!! Can’t say that for more than half the villainess or similar thematic novels on here, esp the ones at the tops of the popularity page (sob).
Something to run through: Yea, Melissa is a mary sue, doesn’t really have any perceived flaw other than a bit of the overtop shows of ‘manly’ (not for being assertive or other qualities associated with men, but literally scenes of her with a clearly masculine face played into the whole “im a strong man” kind of character which i actually quite like) charm
So there is that. Other than this, everything is rather upbeat and convenient, the narrative aspect of Yuri suffering through countless iterations of a miserable life between the grasp of shitty men is so real (ha. ha. ha. except some of us aren’t fortunate enough to be pretty and awesome like she is) it’s interesting and pitiful and makes me appreciate her optimism despite it (albeit with the help of melissa). Anyways, sorry for the yap sesh, definitely read this if you just want something fluffy to chew on.

I’m not gonna comment on the red flags that have always been in this story that require heavy doses of suspension of disbelief, I just wanted to say smth i always found funny. That being, it’s teased somewhat carelessly whether the detective guy actually cares about his friend’s grooming a little boy or not, but what really gets me is the fact that iirc, they straight up “test him” to make sure he won’t report the fact that he’s getting statutorily raped by kousuke . Like if you’re gonna make an unethical fictional age gap romance, at least stop reminding ppl of the fact that you know it’s wrong??? Self-awareness is NOT the kind of look you wanna be going for when you do it so half-assedly (by trying to play it off and writing any personal sentiments into the characters as a stand in) and for the sake of (I assume) deflecting criticism. At least have the integrity and balls to be properly honest about what the story is or don’t mention it at all. Having a character expressly question the actions of the ML but not actually have him face the consequences and take accountability for it just means it’s a pointless plot point that just serves to add drama. It serves no narrative function (in terms of character development) other than make-up rape (i don’t really consider it sex tbh that man is like 30 ☠) and padding out chapters. Again, I don’t want to go into yapping anyone’s eyes out but I still think its so funny to ‘test’ a minor and be like “but you won’t tell anyone, right?”
Last little side note: The beginning 2 volumes were so wild… (so was the whole series but) Kousuke behavior is so crazy bc why is this grown ass man gatekeep girlboss GASLIGHTING a teenager into believing he’s in love with him like brother has NOTHING better to do. As I’ve gotten older, it’s become kind of a turn-off that a man that age is THAT emotionally immature, and don’t get me wrong, I like my men ***pathetic***

Both are toxic as fuck. Man, Leo is such an idiot I don't believe he will truly change just for J.J.'s sake (he'll, in 5 years he didn't even think so until J.J. broke up with him) and J.J. is also toxic as hell.

Fucking when he's blatantly ignoring you and asking you to move from their line of vision just to keep playing. Of course it's the perfect time to talk about a job offer you've been considering. And also Leo, fucking disgusting eating chips in the sofa and leaving the crumbs and using outside shoes inside the house when you have a "No shoes inside the house" policy. Yeah, he's a narcissist and J.J. should get away from him. It's hard to get away from someone you've learned to love and care for, but them saying "Oh, I'll change for you" just seems like a red flag that they'll most likely won't change xd. Just leave before you get hurt more.

And for people telling that J.J. didn't rape Leo in that chapter 13 and 14. He did.

First of all, Leo wanted to do it in a hotel, but I.J. wanted to do it right then and there. Leo wasn't okay with it, but j.j. coerced Leo into agreeing threatening to back off from the agreement of being fuck buddies. That's not consent xD. Even if Leo and J.J. both agreed to being sex buddies, it's done with both consent on the location, times, using or not a condom, etc. Leo was coerced into it at that moment with J.J. threatening to undo the agreement, and even J.J. was purposefully rough on Leo, and didn't even stop nor slowed down despite Leo telling him to do so.
J.J didn't even loosen up Leo appropriately before putting his dick in, he could've hurt him and tear something up (ofc for the sake of the story that didn't happen but irl preparation is the most important part to not hurt your partner AND J.J. MISSED THAT)

I love it when a paper thin personality mc whose only merit is to be attractive, written with an annoying amount of pride “wins” the love and affections (in this case, obsession) of main leads . But above all, I REALLY love a stupidly naive character who’s so innocent and trusting because all people are good and we should hold hands in a prayer circle and sing kumbaya. I haven’t read up to the grape scene(s) because…!!! — I don’t wanna. Ignoring the unnecessary violence and abuse (yay!!!) I didn’t hate some parts of the writing which is what makes it worse when you see smth that coulda been great, go so so bad (well, that’s more my opinion but). Like those self-reflective/introspective chapters from seung eon are great! I would argue that the ml is more developed as a character than the protagonist. Jiwook feels like a fetish scapegoat more than a protagonist and a victim of the intent of the plot. Realistically, you’d think that being impoverished so much and having to work your ass off to achieve or obtain opportunities would harden someone’s understanding of the world and of people, but I suppose not. Such a shame that he doesn’t have an ounce of the brain function that seung eon does! And I usually never side with tops like him (doesn’t excuse ANY of his behaviors)
Anyways, this isn’t a productive analysis of the story just a rant, sorry all who read this unfortunate word slop.

Idk i really tried to give this manhwa a fair shot. I read up til chapter 30 and I just can’t care. The antagonist is just… 2D. So is the ML. The FL is fine i guess.. this whole story is just so lukewarm. Unless I’m missing something I’m really confused on how this was on the first page of popularity for the shojo tag. This is no fault to the translators that did their best but, you can hardly read the story and whatever story is left is just so weak
If anyone has any other knowledge about it and disagrees you’re free to prove me wrong, after all, I only read 30 chapters.
