Ok fine think of it similarly this way. I'm gonna put it in manga story terms for it to be easier to understand. Say a person is a reincarnation of someone then they retain their memories of their previous life, their own person didn't disapear they just became a new person. The alters aren't disappearing they're becoming whole again because the brain was split into different parts because of a tramatic experience in childhood. When alters integrate it's because they're life becomes more stable so the need for a certain alter isn't needed. Like a sexual alter theyre there for sexual things, but when the host feels like they overcame their trauma they integrate.
My brain is fried at the moment it 3:40 am so I probably didn't explain it correctly, but at least you can get the idea.
