I really relate to Taehee on this last chapter. I’m a mixed Hispanic (half white/half Hispanic), my parents didn’t teach me Spanish since they didn’t feel the need to since it’s not spoken in our household. The kids I went to school with never accepted me as a Hispanic and would always tell me I wasn’t truly a Hispanic and that I should stop lying and I was ultimately the white kid who was ostracized. I felt extremely left out and felt uncomfortable going to school. Around high school I only knew bits and pieces of Spanish to pull me through but I was still not accepted by my peers. I wish people would see that just because you’re not fluent in the language doesn’t mean you’re not apart of that group. I have my Spanish blood and I’m still Hispanic regardless of what others say and will no longer let it impact me in a negative way.
