This is a beautifully written story of tragic loss and the cavernous scars left behind. The art is beyond phenomenal. There is no character growth because each is too empty to move forward, but that is their appeal. As a literary work, this manga is exceptional. As a love story it fails miserably, but it never claims to be a love story. If you seek a beautifully written and drawn, dark drama - this mangaka's writing and drawing prowess is not to be missed. If you seek a love story... skip this one.
I disagree about "no love in any form".
I feel the main character uses sex as his "form of love". It's true he may never "love" another like he loved his dead lover, but it's like he is going out of his way to recreate what he felt through other people. To him, sex = love.

I understand what you mean and would agree in other story lines. May I clear up what may have been confusing in my comment? IMO, the MC neither holds nor shows love to any of his currently living partners. Love is not meant to satisfy ones self, it is meant to be given to another to bring them happiness. The main character only has love for a dead man and withholds it from his partners. Selfishly using sex to fill the hole in his heart left by his dead lover does not equate to "giving love to another to bring them happiness" because his "love" takes no shape outside of sex - no respect, empathy or even consideration to his partners feelings. His partners are merely tools to satisfy his own needs. Granted, his partners are aware of his selfishness and share in it, and his motives, but they don't love him either. The "pet" desires a safe haven, the prostitute desires money. The MC can offer both of them what they want, in exchange for the sex he wants. They may NEED each other to fulfill their desires, but love is not part of the bargain they have struck. This is where I draw my opinion and comment from. It was also meant to serve as a warning to readers seeking a "fluffy love story". Even "love" as you've described it would not make this story "fluffy".
I also love this mangaka's works. The art is breathtaking and the depth of the stories is found among few other mangaka in this genre.

...of Dis-associative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. As a person who suffers from D.I.D.,this story was initially touchy for me. However, it was well written and well researched. Even the ending was, not only plausible, but accurate.
I highly recommend this touching and heartwarming drama. It is well worth reading and re-reading.

It is only thanks to the professional help of therapists when I was a child and the continuing support of my husband that I have my condition under control now. Much like Ryouichirou/Shigeaki, having someone to love and support me through the rough times and allow me to attempt to live a normal for me, healthy life has made all the difference.
I completely agree. If not for the support of my mom and husband I wouldn't know "normal" now. I didn't have my disorder to this degree, but I always "fell asleep" to escape from the emotional and physical trauma inflicted on me. This story shows both the before me and the present me. I am glad I have the husband I have (we have been married almost 42 years now).

We have a few rules in our marriage: 1-the word divorce is not in our vocabulary. 2-we keep no secrets from each other, even the bad stuff. 3-we never deny the other love or making love even if we are not in the mood ourselves, we still pleasure the other when they need it. 4-we always talk to each other first before we make any monetary decisions (more people break up over money issues so we don't fall into that kind of trap). This includes purchases like cars. Personal issues, like a lack of self confidence, low self-esteem and , in this manga's case, personality disorders (I will discuss that in a moment) can all be "root causes" behind cheating. Other reasons can range from an unfulfilled sex life, to just having a cold and distant partner. For the most part, people don't cheat for the "shits and giggles" of it. That is not to say that cheating doesn't cause pain and problems for everyone involved or that it should be overlooked. Rather, the opposite. Cheating is merely a symptom of a much bigger problem, one that should be investigated, considered and addressed.
As for the "cheater" in this manga, Kou, he suffered a trauma great enough to cause severe memory loss. This type of injury, particularly brain injuries, often cause personality changes and disorders in the victim. These personality disorders are commonly exacerbated by alcohol consumption. (as depicted in this manga)
So, my final remark on this matter is this: until the "root problem" behind a "cheater's" actions is addressed, is a little tolerance; understanding and forgiveness too much to ask? Ignorance and intolerance has never gotten anyone anywhere.
