The reason the father does not give Juvel a lot of affection is because he has many enemies including the emperor, and if the emperor knew how much he cared for Juvel the emperor would use that against him(as you can see the emperor hates the duke)and try and put Juvel in harms way. Juvel would also be in danger from the dukes many enemies and possibly exposed to a assassination. The duke loves Juvel more then anything and would do whatever she wanted, but in order to protect her the best way he could he had to make it seem like he didn’t care about her so she wouldn’t be put in harms way.
Also if you don’t know already in the past life when the duke gave juvel the knife and locked her up it was because in order to find the real suspect he had to pretect juvel by locking her away so no one could attack her and then he gave her the knife to protect herself.
