Due to his trauma he judges others unconsciously, because that's what everyone did to him and eventually he started to judge himself. The character himself developed his phobia due to the constant bullying. Think of it in his shoes, he sees being fat as shameful and a sin because of the people who bullied him. Hopefully he gets over this and has some character development, but please don't invalidate his feelings.
