In chapter 40, Crochetta tries to maintain the facade to make sure he doesn't forgive her, but Roger confesses he just cannot bring himself to believe it was all a lie. He planned to meet her later after he had sorted things out more (like his feelings I reckon), but well, they ran into each other now. Based on their facial expressions, both seem to be touched / pining for each other. He hands her the knife and makes him point it at his throat, before telling her he's going to kiss her. They make out, and Crochetta obviously cannot bring herself to hurt him. Roger stops once he notices she's hurt herself instead (she grasped the blade with her other hand until it drew blood). She begins scolding him and angrily begs him to stop getting hurt because of her (i.e. being self-destructive). Roger begs her to go get her wound looked at by a doctor, but she blows him off and leaves to return to Arnold. He is left puzzled by the way she expressed herself.
