It's been a while since I read about it but it was coined as the murder castle. I think a show was made about it as well but I didn't watch it.
"The Murder Castle" was the work of H.H. Holmes, America's first documented serial killer. He operated out of Chicago in the late 19th and early 20th century during the Columbian World Exhibition. Holmes commissioned the hotel in the 1890s (lines up with this time period), which was constantly under construction. The result was a confusing and backwards layout that contained many hidden rooms and a lower level meant for hiding and disposing of corpses.
