This game is called "yut nori" (윷놀이) and is a game where you have to throw 4 sticks in a mat to get a certain combination.
Depending on how many points you get each throw, you move that many spots on the board.
The goal is to get both of your tokens to the goal spot.
These sticks have 2 sides, up and down.
If you throw the sticks and 1 lands facing up with the rest down, you get 1 point therefore moving you 1 spot foward on the board.
If 2 land facing up, you move 2 spots. Etc.
Each special combination of stick orientations has a different name which is probably why the translations seem so weird.
Also, if you throw a stick outside the mat you dont move any spaces.
