Dude, at least the protagonist in this story keeps his REAL memories and knows that all the people he meets and talks to here are real people that do exist for real... In the ghost story I read, the ghost one day decides he likes this one living guy protagonist who accdentally came in contact with his remains, and decides to keep him to himself only by manipulaling his entire "reality" without even letting him know: creating fake illusionary people for him to interact with, erasing his memories every time the mc sees anything that reveals the illusion, and removing all the other people around, living AND dead, through fear or well-orchestated misunderstandings...

I mean, this wasn't a regular ghost, but a vengeful ghost (think The Grudge), and a frighteningly reality-altering, powerful one. Even when some other people realized what was happening to the mc (while the mc didn't) they were too scared and unable to help him.
