Actually for him I think it's hard for him to be himself because of love. He loved his mother and wanted her to be happy, therefore wanted to meet her expectations even if he has to turn his back on who he is. Love and fear are often major factors in the capability to being ourselves and not being able to be ourselves. So I just felt very sad for him, then relieved when he finally accepted himself.
