Idts the point of his backstory is to justify his actions in the present but to give a reason and make us understand why he grew up that way. You can sympathize AND still punish the criminal. Ffs like he was a CHILDDD his mom left and he had to live with that piece of shit asshole too. I wish you people wouldn't take this so personally and actually read it like the fictional story this is because the parallels bw jaekyoung and Kim dans childhood are so similar but they turned out so different. both of them are pitiful AND YES JAEKYUNG IS A PIECE OF SHIT SURE but every comment is see is like 'sure he had a sad backstory but that's not reason to treat anyone like that and be a rapist's NEWSFLASH GUYS, ALL CRIMINALS EVEN IRL HAVE A SHITTY PAST OK???? you're all RIGHT ABOUT THAT but like focus on story and actually think about the story. No one's justifying his behaviour bcz of his past(some people do because of lack of critical thinking skills AND TO THEM- PLEASE GROW THE FUCK UPP) idk if what I'm saying is making sense but please just read the story and analyse it using it brain AND feelings not just ur feelings. Thnx

Real. They're too invested and not using their brains to analyze. This story isn't even finished yet but nooo he's iredeemable. Mingwa's trying to be a decent writer creating parallels but nah, all these haters Kim Dan is his nightmare, personified. This is going to be about JK realising he has feelings for Dan and that in order to support him, he has to face his fears, his past and his jinx. In turn, Dan will teach him what he's missing - love. Understanding is different from justifying

Wrote all that because I was very frustrated with the attitude a lot of people are approaching this story with man, and being emotionally atta attached is the point yes, but this much bias and hate towards a character who's getting his backstory explored is crazy. jaekyung's character is getting fleshed out rn but so many people aren't looking at it that way, they think the author is just giving an excuse for how badly he treated kim dan but like that's the point, she's giving us information about why he turned out the way he is. As I said, no one's wrong about jaekyung and not liking him(I dont like him his either like WHY WOULD I LIKE HIM) but the point is that this is a story(not in the sense it's not that serious it's just a story) but in the sense that this is a story where there are characters who are good and bad and are going through character development. Don't treat his backstory as just an excuse, actually try to understand him, not sympathize or feel sorry for him. Reading helps us look at different points of views and open up our perspectives, what a lot of the people are doing is just hating on a character(VALID) and refusing to look at his complexity. Using your 'values' as an excuse to hate on anything like is crazy to me, if you don't like it then move on wtf. The story isn't even completed, the relationship is NO way through major complex issues. Yet, people took a stance and are just so stubbornly sticking to it and ignoring everything else going on :D

I said use your brain dawg, try to understand his character instead of narrowing your focus on to his crimes(and again as I said several times, he's horrible rn sure, I hate him but using that as a reason to not even think about the whys and why nots of his actions is crazy. If this was real life, I would be acting like this too ngl. If a criminal was asking for mercy bcz of his past, that doesn't matter. But in this story RIGHT NOW, jaekyung's past is coming for us to understand him, he's not standing on trial. Instead his character is intentionally getting more fleshed out so the story can move on and the readers get to know him like we know kim dan. And ffs, you can't tell me you've never read a thriller or a horror book, comic or manhwa??? Also plz read my previous reply too. Thnx ily2

Just because people disagree with you doesn't mean they're not approaching the story correctly or reflecting on it. And it's unreasonable to expect people to wait until the story's complete to form opinions - it's fine to form opinions based on the info currently available and that's the purpose of a comments section. By your own rules: if you don't like other people's comments, don’t read them and move on.

The story might be fleshing out Jaekyung’s backstory for narrative reasons, but that doesn't mean we are obligated to sympathize with him or excuse what he's done. His past can add context, sure, but it doesn't change anything. When he saw Kim Dan suffering, he chose to look away. He had every opportunity to act differently, and he didn't. That’s cruelty, and you can’t expect people to just compartmentalize the abuse and violence because a sad flashback came up? That’s like asking someone to feel bad for a bully mid-punch just because they got bullied as a kid. And you say “he’s not on trial”, but really? He kind of is. Readers do get to judge him. That's QUITE LITERALLY part of being a consumer of media. We're not required to view every character with nuance if that nuance is built on pain that they caused others. Fictional or not, empathy isn’t owed to abusers just because we’re shown their pain.
And saying “you’ve never read a horror or thriller?” I can assure you I have, and the reactions when a "sob-story" comes up concerning the antagonist is always the same—complexity doesn't negate that.

I dropped this YEARS ago to marinade. But now I just feel like it's crazy that kids are literally fighting battles(?) can someone plz sell this to me(not the kdrama, the manhwa)

The emptiness you feel once you finish reading this makes you stop reading other things in order to digest what happened. It makes you wanna write a fix-it fan story.
Also, a bunch of kids fighting should dissuade you from reading this, there's like hundreds of other story's with kids fighting and no parents. It's ludicrous but just ignore it and you'll enjoy it.
Ok him yelling he can't stand mc getting involved with other guys(even if it was rape) is the FIRST honest thing out of his mouth that wasn't calculated or dressed up
