i actually think what drove him to that point of hanging himself was the scientists who probably made adam’s life hell due to eve (michael) imprinted on him. they said that only one esper managed to imprint on an guide but they died, and eve was the second one. so they don’t have enough information for what entails an esper to imprint/what are the effects that comes with it, ofc they’d haggle and harass them and basically treat them like a guinea pig. this, along with whatever happened that caused adam’s ankle/leg injury, probably pushed him over the edge. add eve’s mind reading ability, cuz he probably was hearing adam blame himself for all the mishaps and he cared deeply about adam, tempered with adam’s memories so he could live a better life in the future and erased all of his own memories because he thought he was the reason why adam went through hell. he probably also thought that erasing his own memories would erase the imprint he put on adam, thus freeing him from the hell the military/scientist was putting adam through.
My theory is that Adam realized Michael was not getting enough guiding (similar to what is happening between him and Eve). So he committed suicide thinking that it would break the imprint so that Michael could get a "better" guide.
